A positive number is an increase; a negative number means the second value is lower than the first.
What is an average percentage increase?
An average percentage increase measures the mean growth rate between two values, expressed as a percentage. It answers the question: what single rate summarizes the growth from the first value to the second? Use it for revenue, user counts, sales teams, or product lines where you want a typical growth figure.
The calculator uses the compound formula ((final / initial)^(1/n) − 1) × 100 for a per-period average, and the simple formula Σ increase% ÷ n for an arithmetic average of independent rates. For 100 → 121, the average increase is 21% total, or 10% per period compounded over 2 periods.
This differs from the total increase, which is the simple percent change from start to end. Use the average when you need a typical or per-period rate, and the total when you want the whole-period change. Averaging percentages with very different base values can mislead, so check that the bases are comparable.
How to calculate average percentage increase
- 1
Enter the first value
Type the starting figure — the earlier revenue, initial user count, or first-period value you are measuring growth from.
- 2
Enter the second value
Type the later figure. The calculator divides the second value by the first, subtracts 1, and multiplies by 100 to get the average increase.
- 3
Read the mean growth rate
The result shows the average percentage increase and the absolute change, so you can see both the typical rate and the raw amount at a glance.
