What is a percentage increase over time?
A percentage increase over time measures how much a value has grown across one or more periods, expressed as a percentage of the starting value. It answers the question: by what percentage did this value grow from the beginning to the end of the period? Use it for investment returns, multi-year salary growth, population trends, or any series where you want the total cumulative increase.
The formula is ((end value − start value) / start value) × 100. The change is divided by the start value, so the result is always relative to where you began. For 100 → 110 → 121 → 133.1 over three periods, the cumulative percentage increase over time is 33.1%.
This differs from the average annual increase, which converts the total growth into a constant per-period rate. Use cumulative increase for the total growth across the whole window, and the per-year calculator for the annualized rate that would produce that growth.
