Percentage Increase Per Year

A positive number is an increase; a negative number means this year's value is lower than last year's.

What is a percentage increase per year?

A percentage increase per year measures the annualized growth rate between two values separated by one or more years, expressed as a percentage. It answers the question: what constant yearly rate would take the start value to the end value over the period? Use it for salary growth, price inflation, investment returns, or any year-over-year comparison.

The calculator uses the compound annual growth rate (CAGR) formula: r = (Vₙ / V₀)^(1/n) − 1, multiplied by 100 to get a percentage. For 100 growing to 133.1 over 3 years, the per-year increase is 10%. This compounds each year on the prior total.

This differs from the total increase, which is the simple percent change from start to end (33.1% in the example). Use the per-year rate to compare growth across different lengths of time, and the total increase to describe the whole-period change.

How to calculate percentage increase per year

  1. 1

    Enter last year's value

Type the value from the earlier year — the starting salary, initial price, or first-year revenue you are measuring growth from.

  2. 2

    Enter this year's value

Type the value from the later year. The calculator divides this year's value by last year's value, raises to the power of 1/n, and subtracts 1.

  3. 3

    Read the annualized increase percent

The result shows the yearly increase percent and the absolute change, so you can see both the annualized rate and the raw difference at a glance.
