Hours Calculator
Calculate the number of hours between two times. Enter a start and end time to get the total elapsed hours and minutes, with full support for overnight shifts.
Total hours
8h 30m
That is 8.50 decimal hours (510 minutes).
What is an hours calculator?
An hours calculator finds the total elapsed time between a start and an end point. You enter two clock times and the tool returns the difference in hours and minutes, plus a decimal-hours figure that payroll and billing systems use to multiply by an hourly rate.
The underlying math converts both times to minutes since midnight, subtracts the start from the end, and divides by 60. When the end time is earlier than the start — for example a 22:00 to 06:00 overnight shift — the calculator adds 24 hours so the duration is still measured correctly without you having to track day rollover.
Hourly employees use it to verify paychecks, freelancers use it to bill clients, and shift supervisors use it to confirm coverage. Because the output is decimal hours, it drops straight into timesheets and invoicing software.
How to calculate hours between two times
- 1
Enter the start time
Type the start in HH:MM format, like 09:00. AM/PM suffixes such as 9:00 AM are also accepted.
- 2
Enter the end time
Type the end time. If it is earlier than the start, the tool assumes the shift crossed midnight.
- 3
Read hours and decimal
The result shows the total as Xh Ym plus a decimal figure like 8.50 hours, ready for payroll use.
Why use an hours calculator?
Overnight support
Shifts that cross midnight are handled automatically, so 22:00 to 06:00 correctly counts as 8 hours.
Decimal output
Decimal hours like 8.50 match what payroll and invoicing systems expect, removing rounding errors.
Instant verification
Hourly workers can confirm a paycheck in seconds, and freelancers can bill clients without manual arithmetic.
